Elise Gettliffe is a Berlin-based ceramicist. Her pieces are shaped organically using careful gestures and motions, following the controlled techniques she learned whilst honing her craft in Tokyo, Japan. Gettliffe creates functional ceramics, merging a strong tradition of Japanese pottery with elements from her creative background. Having previously worked as a fashion and costume designer, Gettliffe has a sculptural approach to her ceramics, seeking to bring the natural texture and appearance of clay into balance with the form of each piece.
During her residency at the New Road, Gettliffe created a unique body of work in response to historical design elements found within the residence, as well as incorporating washes of colour and drawings on the surface of her ceramics. Gettliffe invited collaborators, including a chef, florist and tea specialist, to contribute to her process. The collection is entirely hand-thrown and meticulously crafted in red clay.
