HOSTEM INVENTORY

Alexandra Standen is a Sydney-based ceramic artist. Her sculptural ceramic works are built by hand using combinations of materials such as terracotta and gold glaze, and southern ice porcelain and indigo pigment. Her work explores how we come to exist within different environments and our relationship to physical and emotional spaces. She is interested in the process of making work in ceramic and the sense of unease of engaging with a medium that holds a functional quality yet is also fragile and precarious in nature. 

Standen was the recipient of the Cite Internationale des Arts Residency in Paris, which she undertook in January 2019, and has completed further residencies in Geneva, Tel Aviv and at the Harley Foundation in the UK. She is the winner of the Sidney Myer Award for Ceramics, Shepparton Art Museum 2012, and a recent finalist in awards including the Churchie National Emerging Art Prize, Gold Coast Ceramic Award and the Wynne Prize.
